SWU and SASW marched together in Glasgow on St Andrew’s Day – Saturday, 30th November 2024.
The theme for this year’s rally in Glasgow city centre was “Resilient and Rising: Marching for 40 Years”. SWU and SASW marched together under one banner as union and professional association to show that there is no room for racism or fascism in Scotland. Together we stand vigilant against the creep of racism and organised fascism, and together we can make a difference.
John McGowan, SWU General Secretary, said:
“Scotland has a long-established commitment to standing against the far-right and offering solidarity with refugees and promoting this through our professional ethics and values. The very DNA of the social work profession advocates for empowerment, diversity, and equality – and all of these were very visible during the rally. It was a pleasure to march together with SASW, the Professional Organisation for Social Workers in Scotland, in this rally that brought together trade unions, community groups, and activists.”
Alison Bavidge, SASW National Director said:
“SASW was proud to join SWU and anti-racism campaigners and trade unionists from across Scotland last weekend. Social workers have a key role in creating a fairer society and I was heartened to join so many who share our vision for a diverse, tolerant and prospering Scotland.”
