The Austerity Action Group (AAG) proudly launched the Battling the Cost-of-Living Crisis: Campaign Action Pack at the SWU Conference on April 27th at the historic Mechanics Institute in Manchester. The event brought together social workers, students, and trade unionists from across the UK to discuss the common threads of solidarity, activism, and social justice.
The Campaign Action Pack is a step-by-step guide on how social workers and their communities can take action against ongoing austerity and the cost-of-living crisis. In it you will find information on everything from how to organise public meetings, rallies, and awareness-raising film nights to setting up petitions, lobbying, and contacting the press.
The AAG has tried to include everything you need to get campaigning, but would welcome your feedback about what works and what doesn’t. You can get in touch with the AAG at aag@swu-union.org.uk.

The Social Workers Union (SWU) and the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) are pleased to support this updated Campaign Action Pack from the AAG and encourage social workers to make use of this brilliant and accessible resource. SWU and BASW are committed to campaigning to bring an end to austerity and the cost-of-living crisis, to be replaced by investment in public services required for a socially just society.
SWU and BASW would like to express our collective thanks and gratitude to Angi Naylor who has been a driving force behind this campaign pack and a leading light in the action against austerity movement. Her hard work championing the voice of social work in the fight against austerity and her unwavering commitment, passion and hard work towards achieving a fairer, more compassionate society continues to inspire us all.
Angi said, “The Campaign Action Pack is designed to give power back to the disenfranchised – get yourself a copy and use it.”
As a part of the ongoing campaign against austerity and, as we are now also facing this cost-of-living crisis, the Austerity Action Group is asking social workers to send in examples of digital poverty and/or fuel poverty experienced by those they support. Please get in touch with any examples at aag@swu-union.org.uk.
